In any team sports there are numerous fouls that you can draw. Some of them are major and some are small. In the sport of soccer, the small ones are often called with a warning. If these fouls continue by the same player then they will be given a yellow card and the major fouls are followed usually by a red card. All of this can be avoided by playing with good sportsmanship of course but just for reference; here are the different penalties and soccer fouls that you will encounter.
Yellow Cards
These are the most severe warnings before you are out of a game. Typically, they are given out for continuous rough playing, talking back or any other bad sportsmanship on the field such as kicking the ball out of bounds when the whistle has been blown.
Red Card
This means ejection. If you receive a red card your team will be down a man for the rest of the game and you will not be allowed to play in the following game. This is the most serious call. A lot of times it comes from fighting, unnecessary roughness, spitting, swearing. A lot of red cards come from getting two yellow cards in one game. In this situation, you are allowed to keep all eleven players but you are ejected.
Indirect Kicks
These are penalties awarded to a team when the game has been stopped because of a foul out of the play. An easier way to put that would be someone tripped somebody who did not have the ball. Indirect kicks have to be touched by two players on the same team before they can score. When a team is rewarded a free kick they have a player that touches the ball and the other player shoots the ball.
Direct Kick
This is when a player involved in the play gets fouled. Direct kicks do not need to touch two players. They can shoot it directly at the goal.
Penalty Kicks
Penalty kicks are when players are fouled in the 18 yard box. Penalty kicks are usually followed by a yellow card, if not a red card. Because these kicks are usually a goal, they are rarely given out. A lot of time the refs are sensitive and do not call fouls as often in the 18 yard line box. Another way that a penalty kick can be given would be a trip when a player has a break away.
